Independiente del Valle arrive in Ambato as leaders of the Championship Group and as favorites in Bescored’s pre-match model. Yet Macará have built a formidable habit at home: when they score first, they win. The tension is simple and compelling. Can the hosts protect a lead against a side that does some of its most damaging work late on?
Matchday 3 of the LigaPro Ecuador 2026 Championship Group brings together the top two. Independiente del Valle lead the group with 77 points from 31 matches, while CSD Macará sit second with 57 points from 32.
The gap between them is mostly about attack. Across the season IDV average 2.42 goals scored per match against Macará’s 1.38, while their goals-conceded averages are almost identical (~1.06–1.10). The question is not about who defends better. It asks whether the visitors can convert their attacking volume into goals. The home side becomes especially reliable in Ambato once it goes ahead.

The story at a glance
Strong at home, dangerous late
- Bescored's model makes IDV favourites even away from home: 43% for an away win, 29% for Macará and 28% for a draw.
- IDV have 77 points against 62.8 expected points (xPts), a gap of +14.2 and clearly above what the model anticipated (z = 2.17).
- Macará took the lead in 9 home league matches this season and won all 9.
- IDV scored after the 75th minute in 58.1% of their league matches, placing them in the league's 100th percentile.
- Season defensive averages are similar; the structural difference is IDV's attack (2.42 vs 1.38 goals scored per match).
What Bescored’s model expects
Bescored’s goal model, a Poisson model with a Dixon–Coles adjustment, estimates λ = 1.083 for Macará and λ = 1.370 for Independiente del Valle, a combined total of ~2.45 goals over 90 minutes. These λ values are model-estimated expected goals calculated before kickoff. They are not historical, shot-based xG.
From the same score matrix, the model gives 29% for a Macará win, 28% for a draw and 43% for an IDV win. It puts the chance of more than 2.5 goals at 44% and of both teams scoring at 50%.
In other words, IDV are clear favourites even on the road, but the model does not necessarily project a high-scoring game. The λ values describe the expected balance of strength; they do not fix the scoreline.
IDV are beating the model’s expectations
Expected points (xPts) add up, match by match, the points the model expected each team to collect before kickoff: 3 × P(win) + 1 × P(draw). Comparing them with the real table shows who has been doing better than their underlying pre-match profile suggested.
IDV have 77 points against 62.8 xPts, a gap of +14.2 with a z-score of 2.17. That is clearly above the model, beyond the report’s |z| ≥ 1.5 threshold. Macará are also in positive territory, with 57 points against 49.6 xPts (+7.4, z = 1.05), but below that threshold.
Bescored’s reading is that IDV do not just score plenty of goals; they have turned their expected results into points with exceptional efficiency this season.

Volume against momentum: the Ambato factor
At home, Macará average 1.53 goals scored and 0.93 conceded per match (15 home matches). Away from home, IDV average 2.47 scored and 1.20 conceded (15 away matches). Macará concede less in Ambato than IDV do on the road; the visitors travel with the stronger attack.
Recent form adds another layer. In their last five completed matches, Macará won four and lost one. The aggregate is 9–7 with 28 shots on target. IDV have three wins, one draw and one defeat (11–8, 29 shots on target) and have not kept a clean sheet in that run.
Over the last 10 matches (excluding one incomplete IDV match), Macará average 15.2 shots with 5.7 on target, IDV ~17 with 6.9 on target. The visitors bring the volume; the hosts bring momentum and the home setting.
When the goals arrive
Bescored’s timing profile measures the share of matches. It tracks when a team scores at least one goal in each 15-minute interval. IDV carry an early threat, scoring in the first 15 minutes in 35.5% of their matches, and an even more striking late one: in the 76–90+’ window the figure rises to 58.1%, which puts them in the league’s 100th percentile.
Macará’s relative threat is more concentrated after half-time, but it stays well below the visitors’ level across the board.
The picture is not of a team that only comes alive late. IDV are a presence in almost every window, and they punish opponents particularly often in the closing stages.

Closing it out vs striking late
In Ambato, Macará have taken the lead in nine LigaPro 2026 matches and won all nine. There were no draws, no defeats, and no points dropped from a winning position. This record is based on 15 home matches. That record does not tell us who will score first, but it makes the opening goal especially valuable for the hosts.
IDV’s counterweight comes late. They have scored after the 75th minute in 58.1% of their 31 league matches, and as visitors in 7 of 15, with 9 goals in that window.
If the scoreline is tight going into the final stages, the visitors will be entering familiar territory.

IDV won both league meetings between the sides in 2026: 0–3 in Ambato on 16 May and 3–1 at home on 5 September. Home advantage was not enough for Macará in May.
That history does not settle the Championship Group. It reinforces the model’s reading. Visitors come in with a recent precedent and a stronger record of turning expectation into points.
The Bescored perspective
Two identities meet in Ambato. Independiente del Valle are the model’s favourites, they have collected more points than their expected numbers suggested, and they carry a threat in almost every phase of a match, especially at the end. Macará’s case rests on something narrower but powerful: at home, a lead has been decisive every time this season.
The scenarios worth watching follow from that. An early Macará goal would test whether their home lead protection holds against a side that scores late in more than half of its matches. A tight scoreline after the 75th minute would hand the visitors the phase in which they are most dangerous. The model gives IDV the edge, not certainty, and does not necessarily expect a high-scoring game.
Source: Bescored pre-match analytical brief (originally prepared for Fútbol con Datos). Data cutoff: 16 October 2026, 05:43 UTC; completed matches only. Win, draw and loss probabilities, over 2.5 goals, both teams to score and λ come from Bescored’s Poisson + Dixon–Coles model and are pre-match estimates, not observations. λ is a model-estimated goal rate, not historical shot-based xG; shot-based xG coverage in LigaPro 2026 was insufficient for reliable averages for both clubs. xPts = sum of pre-match 3 × P(win) + 1 × P(draw) per match played; “clearly above the model” means |z| ≥ 1.5. Goal timing, home/away splits, form, shots and head-to-head are observed historical data. Samples: Macará 32 league matches (15 at home), IDV 31 (15 away); shot averages cover the last 10 matches, excluding one incomplete IDV match.
